SATURN IN THE HIVE: When the sun goes down tonight, grab a pair of binoculars and scan the eastern sky. You’ll know when you run across Saturn because it’s right next to the distinctive Beehive star cluster: Photographer Stefan Seip snapped this picture two nights ago during a break between snowstorms in Stuttgart, Germany. “Saturn and the Beehive are a nice pair–for the naked eye or binoculars,” he says. Even nicer is the view through a backyard telescope. You can see Saturn’s rings and its largest moon Titan: sky map.

TOTAL ECLIPSE: On March 29th, the Moon’s dark shadow touched Earth, tracing a path from Brazil to Mongolia. Wherever the shadow fell, people looked up and witnessed a spectacular eclipse of the sun. UK photographer Nick King took this picture from Antalya, Turkey, deep in the path of totality: This is no ordinary “spectacular-corona-during-a-total eclipse” photo. Look carefully at the Moon. There, in faint outline, are the dark seas and bright highlands we usually see when the Moon is full. How is that possible? Simple: Earthshine. During an eclipse, the supposedly dark New Moon is illuminated by sunlight reflected from Earth. King captured the corona and Earthshine in the same image by carefully combining 10 different exposures.

A Turkish Air Force F-16 fighter jet flies over a military airbase in Dalaman near the southwestern Turkish city of Mugla, Tuesday, May 23, 2006. A Greek and a Turkish warplane collided Tuesday over the Aegean Sea island of Karpathos as they shadowed each other. The Turkish pilot was rescued by a merchant ship, while a Greek helicopter and navy vessels searched for the Greek pilot after the two F-16 jets crashed into the sea 20 kilometers, 12.5 miles, south of Karpathos. FILE – In this July 24, 1974 file photo, aTurkish army tank passes the Saray Hotel in the Turkish section of Nicosia, Cyprus. On the roof of a nearby building is a picture of Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern Turkish republic. Some place names don’t just tell us where we live or where we’re going. They’re also a political statement, or in the eyes of some a politically incorrect one. They may not spark a war of the worlds, but a war of words they can. One of the most cited examples, probably because of the vitriol that ensued, is a 1970s feud over Cyprus that played out in a U.N. forum. It started after Turkey occupied the northern part of the Mediterranean island, and replaced Greek names for villages with Turkish ones. (AP Photo/File)
