Of the Brazilian Amazon Hydroelectric Dams

A vulture stands over the drying lakebed of the Itumbiara hydroelectric dam as the dam runs at only 9 percent of capacity due to low water levels, according to the dam’s operator, in the city of Itumbiara on the border between the states of Goias and Minas Gerais in Central Brazil, January 9, 2013. One of the worst droughts in Brazil’s history is depriving many dams of the water they need to generate electricity, but Brazil looks less vulnerable today to an energy crisis similar to one in 2001, since the government built dozens of thermoelectric power plants to reduce the country’s dependence on hydro power from 88 percent to about 75 percent. Brazil’s northeast is suffering its worst drought in decades, threatening hydro-power supplies in an area prone to blackouts and potentially slowing economic growth in one of the country’s emerging agricultural frontiers. Lack of rain has hurt corn and cotton crops, left cattle and goats to starve to death in dry pastures and wiped some 30 percent off sugar cane production in the region responsible for 10 percent of Brazil’s cane output. Using or throwing a dagger or a knife, whether moving or standing still, developed into an art (tantojutsu) in which the women of the buke often became quite skilled. These women carried the dirk (kaiken) on their persons at all times, this weapon being for them what the katana was for their male counterparts. — Secrets of the Samurai

Among the weapons the samurai women handled with skill was the spear, both the straight (yari) and the curved (naginata), which customarily hung over the doors of every military household within the precincts of the clan’s establishment. She was also equally well versed in handling the short dagger (kaikan) , which like the male warrior’s wakizashi, was always carried on her person (usually in her sleeve or sash) and which she could deftly employ against armed foes in close combat or throw with deadly accuracy. — Secrets of the Samurai

MAYAN BEE GOD The Bee image of a flying god has to be related to a stinging element. Ophiuchus has a blocky appearance with a pointed roof. It has two extra areas on each side where the radishes appear to fit. The area on the left stretches out into the Milky Way, just about where there is a break in the star formation. It gives the appearance of bees either coming or going from a hive.  The two places that use a bee-god image most prominently are near the sea coast at Tulum, and in the Mississippi area of the US.

Giant Emerald’s Provenance Ever More Cloudy December 22, 2010 LOS ANGELES (CN) - With each hearing, it seems as though the ownership trial over the world’s largest emerald creates more questions than answers. One of the most fundamental is the value of the 840-pound emerald at the heart of the dispute. Upon closer inspection of the Bahia Emerald at the center of the trial, one piece of paper dated November 2001 estimated its value at $972 million. However, a second appraisal a year later gave its value as $372 million.

Bahia Emerald Ownership Dispute to Resume Trial on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 January 7, 2011 LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Today, at a status conference held before the Hon. John A. Kronstadt, it was agreed that the trial would continue on Wednesday, January 19, 2011, at 9:30 a.m. Until the case is resolved, the Bahia Emerald will remain in custody with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department. At 840 pounds, the Bahia Emerald is said to be the world’s largest raw emerald.

This glowing emerald nebula is provided by NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope Wednesday June 15, 2011 astronomers believe rings like this are actually sculpted by the powerful light of giant “O” stars. O stars are the most massive type of star known to exist. Named RCW 120, this region of hot gas and glowing dust can be found in the murky clouds encircled by the tail of the constellation Scorpius. The ring of dust is actually glowing in infrared colors that our eyes cannot see, but show up brightly when viewed by Spitzer’s infrared detectors. At the center of this ring are a couple of giant stars whose intense ultraviolet light has carved out the bubble, though they blend in with other stars when viewed in infrared. (AP Photo/NASA)
