Snow leopard cub with storybook beginnings makes debut at Bronx Zoo Aug. 27, 2013 How the unnamed cub ended up at the zoo is the stuff of storybooks — literally. His orphaned father, Leo, garnered global attention when a shepherd rescued him in the Himalayan mountains of Pakistan at less than 2 months old. Leo was handed over to Pakistani authorities when he outgrew his home with the shepherd’s family, but the government was unable to care for him.

Varuna presides over the relationship of man with the gods. He is the ruler of the “other side”, of the invisible world. The sudden favor of the gods and the elements, their unaccountable cruelty, cannot be understood. The behavior of Varuna, who rules over the invisible, cannot be foreseen; hence he appears a dangerous lord, a despot. “He is the owner of the magic-power (maya) through which forms are created. He represents the inner reality of things, higher truth, and order in their transcendent aspects, beyond the understanding of man. His absolute power is felt during the night and in all that is mysterious, while man-made laws, represented by Mitra, rule the day.  — Varuna (the Coverer or Binder), The Mysterious Law of the Gods : The Gods Of India

Between the earth and the sky , abode of the sun, in the intermediary sphere, or sphere of space. the dwelling place of the subtle beings whose king is the lord of the wind, Vaya.

Just as fire, the devourer, was the mouth of the gods, wind is their breath. In the Upanishads, Vayu appears as the cosmic life breath, The Mahabharata calls him the life breath of the world, the universal “spirit”, impeeler of life and of the living. Vayu is also the substance and the essence of speech.  The name vayu comes from the root va “to blow”.

Vayu is the purifier, the first to have drunk the ambrosia, the soma. He is an explorer, the messenger of the gods, the leader of sacrifices.

Vayu is also called the “wanderer” (Vata), “the one without whom one dies” (Marut), “the one by whom one lives” (Anila), “the cleanser” (Pavana).

In the Vedas Vayu is the friend of Indra, the thunderbolt,  and ride with him in a chariot of gold which is drawn  by a thousand horses and which can reach the sky. Vayu is pictured as a strong and powerful white man riding a deer. He holds a bow and arrows. All his attributes are white. Vayu is the father of the hero Bhima and of the monkey Hanuman. He is the king of the celestial musicians.
